Sackville refers to several different areas located along the Sackville River. The main community commonly referred to as Sackville is Lower Sackville.
Lower Sackville is a suburban community within the Halifax Regional Municipality, located approximately 25 km northwest of downtown Halifax. It has a population of around 51,749 as of 2023.
History
- Originally inhabited by the Mi’kmaq people for thousands of years before European colonization.
- Founded in 1749 by Captain John Gorham, who established Fort Sackville on orders from Governor Edward Cornwallis.
- Named after George Germain, 1st Viscount Sackville.
- Experienced significant suburban development from the 1970s onward due to new highway connections and housing projects.
- Became part of the amalgamated Halifax Regional Municipality in 1996.
Geography
- Located in the northwestern part of the Halifax region, about a 20-minute drive from downtown Halifax.
- Situated along major transportation routes like Highways 101 and 102, Route 354, and Sackville Drive (Trunk 1).
- Includes parks like Sackville Lakes Provincial Park and community facilities like the Sackville Sports Stadium and Public Library.
